Fun Things to Do in Denver
With snowcapped peaks towering in the horizon and promising adventure, as well as a top-notch gourmet scene and ever-growing list of craft breweries, Denver has something for every sort of tourist.
There are so many exciting things to do in Denver that it may kind of make your head spin if you’re trying to organize a trip.
Denver is a city we’ve visited to a couple of times, but generally on our route to other locations. So we never truly examined it… until today.
Our editor, Amanda, calls Denver home for more than 2 years and knows the city well. Like, very good. So when we were planned to stay in Denver for a few days on a road trip, we asked for a few options, and she returned to us with 10 pages worth of suggestions.
Outdoor Adventures in Denver
Situated at the base of the Rocky Mountains, it should come as no surprise that there are practically unlimited outdoor activities in and around Denver.
We’re presenting some of the greatest things to do outside in the “mile high city”, from heart-thumping experiences to low-key ways to enjoy some time outdoors.
1. Practice Yoga On The Rocks
-
If you want to get your downward dog on, you’ll have no shortage of venues to pick from in crunchy Denver. But if you want to practice yoga with a twist — physically and figuratively — you might be interested in traveling out of town for a morning session.
-
Yoga on the Rocks is a historic Denver tradition, and after hearing about it for years, this was at the top of my “to do” list in Denver.
-
While it looks quite a bit different recently — participants are separated at least 6 feet apart, prior tickets are necessary, and masks must be worn the length of the session — it was still a very fantastic experience. Plus, it was reassuring to know they’re doing everything they can to keep people safe.
-
Shoutout to our teacher! On a related subject, I just had to take a minute to call out the instructor of our class, Ali Duncan.
-
She was a terrific instructor (I’ve never wept at a yoga class before this one!), and she is the creator of Urban Sanctuary, a yoga studio and health center. The venue seems wonderful, and they offer a broad variety of programs from standard yoga flows to nude yoga (yes!).
-
And the even great part about Urban Sanctuary is that they are focusing on establishing a space for POC and others who are frequently left out of the normal “yoga world”. There are PRIDE-only and POC-only classes as well as ones available to everybody. If you have time while in Denver, check them out!
2. Catch A Performance At Red Rocks Amphitheater
-
Speaking of this wonderful venue… If you ever get the chance to see a musician you enjoy play at Red Rocks, DO IT. Make a journey out of it. It is an event you will love, and quite honestly, it will spoil most other concerts for you.
-
There are areas for tailgating and merchants onsite offering anything from Coors to local artisan brews. Oh, and food too. Because that’s vital.
-
There is something fairly remarkable about the venue - rock formations rising from the bottom to provide the sense of a small room and practically perfect acoustics.
-
It is really spectacular witnessing the venue transition from being drenched in midday sunshine to cast in a crimson glow at dusk to being an undulating flow of people grooving to their favorite performer beneath the stars. Like we just stated, if you have the chance, schedule a show here. You won’t regret it.
3. See An Outdoor Movie In The Summers
-
Since we’re still on the topic of Red Rocks, another great event series they provide in the summer is Film on the Rocks. It’s exactly what it sounds like: movies in an amazing outdoor venue… and you can bring your own snacks. Sounds like the ideal date night to me!
-
But Red Rocks isn’t the only spot to see an outdoor film during the summers in Denver. Below is a list of other places where you may enjoy a movie beneath the stars. (Some are even free!)

4. Float Down The River In Golden
-
If you’re visiting Denver in the summertime and are seeking for a cool way to escape the heat, keep reading…
-
Just 30 minutes from downtown, the village of Golden is a terrific spot to spend a day. Straddling Clear Creek, the water is one of the major draws to the town when the weather warms up.
-
There are portions of rapids, so this isn’t a dull float!
5. Go On A Trek Near Denver
-
You don’t have to walk far beyond the city boundaries to find yourself surrounded by nature in the gorgeous foothills and Rocky Mountains. If you have a car, you will have practically endless alternatives for trekking in every direction. However, lots of the treks can be accessible by public transit from Denver as well.
-
If you’re interested in hiking while in and around Denver, here are some spots to begin with…
-
Access the large butte known as Table Mountain in Golden from neither of the North Table Mountain Trail or the South Table Mountain Trail. On top of the large plateau covered with windswept grass, you’ll have access to a range of varied path alternatives.
